Unable to edit and open file in SharePoint – getting error while clicking on dropdown menu to edit

December 5th, 2009 | Categories: Troubleshoot Issues, WSS 2.0 | Tags: ,

Another common problem in WSS environment is unable to edit file from document library. Many times it has been found that end user is having adequate access to the Shared document library and they supposed to edit the file by clicking the edit menu. However while clicking on the edit-item drop down menu, nothing happens and user not able to edit the file. In other words they are not able to work on the file except reading.

Workaround option is download edit and uploads. But that is not the best way to resolve. As on initial starts the following steps need to be performed first

To check whether SharePoint site is under trusted site list in IE:
•         Open IE
•         Click on tools >> Internet Options
•         Click on security Tab
•         Click on Trusted Sites
•         If your SharePoint URL (for example http://sharepoint.microsoft.com) is not display on the web site list, then you need to add the url (i.e. http://sharepoint.microsoft.com) on the text box, and click then to ADD button to add this URL to your trusted site.
•         Click Ok to save this

To check whether ActiveX mode is enable on your IE :
•         Open IE
•         Click on tools >> Internet Options
•         Click on security Tab
•         Next click on ‘Custom level button’ (on the same form) and check the following ActiveX settings with this screen shot (Download unsigned ActiveX controls would be Prompt), and then click OK.

ActiveX Control setup in IE

Another good point you also need to check that is whether SharePoint client services are installed on your machine properly or not. It might be possible due to some higher Office installation or MS Project or MS VISIO installation, the existing SharePoint client is messed up in your machine. In that case you need to check the SharePoint client, and installed the services on your machine (if it is not installed yet).

Here the steps below how to accomplish it:
1. Open Control Panel and Add Remove Programs
2. Find Microsoft Office Professional 2003 and click the Change button
3. Select “Add or Remove Features” (already selected) and click Next button
4. Click checkbox “choose advanced customization of applications” and click Next
5. Go to the last Feature “Office Tools” and click + sign to expand
6. Locate the Feature “Windows Sharepoint Services Support” (about half way down list)
7. Click + sign to expand Sharepoint Features
Make sure all Sharepoint feature (Main and 3 sub-features) are “installed” – white background
If any of the Sharepoint Features have a red X, “Not Available”, click the top Sharepoint Feature icon to display menu, and select “Run all from My Computer”.
8. Click Update to complete.

SharePoint Client

However the problem might still exist. May be if you are trying to use script debugger (IE plug-in “development tool” under “Extras” tab ) and probably you will get the following error message:

m  CMenu(currentItemID + “_menu”);

This could be easily be remove by uninstalling IE. If end user haveing IE7.0 or IE 8.0 version, then end user need to be uninstall the IE from his/her machine and reboot. Next simply reinstall the IE 8.0.

Happy ending :)
